NDIS - what to expect in the first 12 months?
You have been accepted for NDIS, you understand the three types of funding supports, and your plan has finally arrived, how exciting!? You open it up, and it is long, and scary, and the language is convoluted. Don’t let it get the better of you, we are here to help you through!
Once your first plan is finalised you will be contacted by a representative to discuss how to put it into action. This contact will happen within seven days of you receiving your plan. The NDIS will then work with you to implement your plan. This support could be provided by a Local Area Coordinator, a plan support coordinator or another party who will help you to connect with community and mainstream or funded supports.
When you have decided on the supports and services you need and have chosen who will provide them, the final step is setting up a service booking for your NDIS registered providers. This step isn’t needed if you are using unregistered providers or self-managing funds. Keep in mind, you do not have to give anyone a copy of your NDIS plan. Sharing your plan is your choice. You can choose to share parts or all of your plan with your service providers through the myplace portal. In particular, you may want to share information about you and your goals so they know what you want to achieve and how you would like them to help you. All providers must comply with the Privacy Act 1988 and must not share your personal information with anyone else without your permission. If you have concerns about your privacy, speak to your provider about their privacy policy and rules.
Your first plan will give you time to think about how the supports you currently receive are working for you and what else you might need to achieve your longer-term goals before your scheduled plan review in 12 months, so feel free to play with it, try new things, and find what truly works for you.
What are the types of NDIS financial support?

So, you have been accepted for funding, but did you know there are three distinct types of NDIS support categories? If you are a bit confused by how this works, we have you covered!
Core supports:
Core Supports basic help you to purchase the things you need to live your daily life. Funding for Core Supports is flexible, which means you can use one Support Category’s funds to pay for another support. This will work as long both the items are Core Supports (excluding Category 2 – Transport).
Capital supports:
Capital Supports are one-off items that come around occasionally in order to support you in your daily life. These costs can include assistive technology, like wheelchairs or prosthetics, or modifications to make your home more suitable for you to live in.
Capacity building supports:
Capital building supports enables you to build the skills to become more independent and includes supports such as therapy.

Preparing for your planning meeting

Prior preparation prevents poor performance, and that even goes for preparing for your planning meeting with the NDIS, and we are here to help.

Before the meeting:

  • Complete booklet 2 – Planning. If you don’t have a print-out, you can download the resource on the NDIS website.
  • Make sure you know when your appointment is, and who it will be with.
  • Find a quiet place to take the call where you can focus, as most planning meetings are happening over the phone at the moment.
  • Make sure you have your phone with you, it is charged and you are in a space with good reception.
  • Have any reports or assessments with you. If possible, send them to your ECEI partner, LAC or NDIA Planner before the call.
  • If you want a friend, family member or someone to help you with the meeting, make sure they are available and make sure that only one person talks at a time.

During the meeting:

  • You can, at any time, ask the person doing your planning meeting to stop, repeat, or explain things.
  • The meeting facilitator will guide you through the planning process, but take notes and ask any questions you have along the way.
  • Make sure you know what the next steps are before ending the call.

After the meeting:

  • Make sure you have someone to debrief with, you can reach out to us for assistance whenever you need!

What to expect in your NDIS planning meeting
There are many steps on your NDIS journey, but the first is your planning meeting. This is your opportunity to get an NDIS plan you’re happy with, with the funding YOU need to achieve YOUR goals.

Examples of things you will be asked about in your first NDIS planning conversation:

  • your personal details
  • your community and mainstream supports
  • how to manage every day activities
  • your safety, including equipment, accommodation or help to take care of yourself or your home
  • the goals you want to pursue
  • ways to manage your plan
  • the support you need to use your NDIS plan.
Make sure to take your time to answer, be yourself, and advocate for your needs. If you need someone to help you on that journey, we are here for you.

At the end of your planning conversation the NDIS official will talk about the next steps, including how your plan will be reviewed and how to start using the funding in your plan.

How to apply for NDIS

So, you have been diagnosed with a disability, now what?

You may have heard that you may be eligible to receive monetary assistance through the NDIS in order to access support. This month we are helping step you through the application process!

Before completing your NDIS funding application, the NDIS requires you to assess your eligibility.

To be eligible you must;
Be aged between 7 and 65, and
Live in Australia and have Australian residency, and
Have a requirement for support from a person because of permanent and significant disability, and/or
Require special equipment because of a permanent and significant disability and/or,
Need some supports now to reduce your future needs.

You can also check if you’re eligible by visiting the NDIS website.

Once you have assessed your eligibility, you can call the NDIA to make an Access Request over the phone or you can complete the access request form on paper.

During your access request, you will be asked a series of questions about yourself and your disability. Your doctor or other health care professional may also be required to submit evidence of your disability and its impact on your life.

To make your access request, call 1800 800 110 or speak to us today for help applying.

If your access request is approved, your next step will be to meet with a local NDIS coordinator for your planning meeting. For more information on this, chat to us today
